Argentina defeated Italy 3-0 at Wembley Stadium to win the 2022 Finalissima trophy. The Cup of Champions was last won by Diego Maradona’s side in 1993, and has been retained by the squad led by Lionel Messi against Italy.
The Copa America winners are now 32 games unbeaten in all competitions, and have not lost a match in three years. Winning the trophy at Wembley Stadium gives the team a big boost ahead of their World Cup campaign later this year. Italy, on the other hand, will have to start from scratch all over again after a dismal performance.
Argentina win Finalissima 2022
Lautaro Martinez opened the scoring for the South Americans, after Lionel Messi showed remarkable strength to hold off the defence and play a ball into the six yard box. The Inter Milan striker tapped the ball in from close range to make it 1-0.
Angel Di Maria doubled their lead shortly before half time, showing great pace to break away from the defense and chip the ball over his PSG teammate, Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Giorgio Chiellini’s final appearance for Italy ended after only 45 minutes, as he was substituted at half time. Despite Roberto Mancini making three changes at half time, things didn’t improve for Italy on the pitch. Argentina dominated the second half as well, and were extremely confident in possession.
Paulo Dybala came on in the final minutes, and scored the third goal for Argentina after another assist from Lionel Messi. Italy were never allowed to settle into the game, and now have to regroup ahead of their Nations League campaign.
