According to a new report from renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will announce an updated version of its Vision Pro headset by mid-2023 with mass production slated to start in the second half of 2025.
The Upcoming Apple Vision Pro Headset
Perhaps its most important improvement in this new version is that it will be rocking an Apple M5 chip, a large leap over the current Vision Pro’s M2 chip. This upgrade is expected to provide a major boost in processing power for the device, especially in Apple Intelligence technology.
Despite these internal improvements, Kuo reports that the overall design and hardware specifications of the Vision Pro will largely remain unchanged. The move would help Apple manage the cost of production without hiking up price points from close to the entry point of $3,499 for the previous model.
According to Kuo, if the improved version provides an attractive user experience, it will promote Apple’s spatial computing platform to be widely used. He also pondered whether the Vision Pro could support advanced AI features, such as text-to-video capabilities like OpenAI’s Sora technology that might make the experience more engaging.
Reuters is reporting the same, while Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has said Apple plans to bring some of those Vision Intelligence features to the future Vision Pro headset. While the device is currently capable of running on-device AI functionalities, such as writing tools, notification summaries, and an upgraded Siri, these enhancements are not expected to roll out in 2024. Instead, Apple may save its implementation of even Apple Neural for visionOS 3, which could launch as late as 2025.
In short, the next-gen Vision Pro headset wants to come with significant improvements, especially through the new M5 chip and possible AI features. The look will be familiar but these changes are welcome asks, upping the game and making it one of the players in what is becoming a pretty exciting world of spatial computing.
