Apple’s Intensive Development of Foldable iPad Sparks Late 2024 Announcement Possibility

Apple appears to be accelerating the development of a foldable iPad, and while there’s currently no chatter about a foldable iPhone, it’s reasonable to assume that if they can successfully produce a tablet with a new hinge design, they might explore a similar concept for smartphones.

More About the Rumored Foldable iPad

Reports suggest that the foldable iPad is in the midst of ‘intensive development.’ This information was gleaned from a paywalled report on DigiTimes, as reported by MacRumors. Apple is reportedly collaborating with undisclosed suppliers on this project, with initial production expected to commence by the end of 2024. If all goes smoothly, an optimistic timeline would have the foldable iPad making its debut by late 2024 or early 2025.

It’s worth noting that Apple has been reportedly working on this product for four years, during which there have been numerous design adjustments aimed at enhancing the foldable iPad. One reason for Apple’s choice to focus on a foldable iPad rather than a foldable iPhone is the relatively small share of the company’s earnings that this segment currently represents. Producing a smaller number of units for an initial production run allows the company to address fewer issues, should any arise.

Apple’s primary challenges with the foldable iPad seem to revolve around the panels and hinges. Many competing products exhibit a noticeable crease in the middle of the foldable device, and while some manufacturers might not view this as a cosmetic flaw, Apple likely does. The tech giant has been working closely with Samsung and LG to mass-produce flexible OLED panels that exhibit minimal creasing effects.

Additionally, Apple is keen on implementing a simplified hinge design that can endure wear and tear. According to an industry insider, the hinge mechanism comprises a whopping 885 components, making it an intricate and vital component of the device. As of now, no details regarding the pricing or specifications of the foldable iPad have emerged, but given its novel form factor, it’s likely to boast robust internal hardware and, consequently, may come with a hefty price tag.
