Apple will unveil the new Apple Watch Series 9 alongside the new iPhone 15 series. While no design changes are expected this year, watchOS 10 will be the most significant update to the wearable since the original Apple Watch was released.

According to reports, the Apple Watch Series 9 will include an updated S9 chip based on the A15 Bionic for improved performance. This could imply that the S9 chip will be manufactured using a 5nm technology. Analyst Mark Gurman revealed the material in a new Discord channel for Power On newsletter readers.

The Apple Watch Series 8 is powered by the S8 chip, which is effectively the same chipset announced with the launch of the Apple Watch Series 6 two years ago.

While the firm labelled the S8 processor as a brand-new chip with little to no upgrades, the performance is nearly identical to that of the S6 or S7 chip. Apple’s A15 Bionic and S9 chips are comparable in that they both use 5nm architecture, which will result in improved performance and battery life.

Battery life is critical on a wearable, and the new S9 chip has the potential to deliver spectacular results. App startup times will be faster since the chip will take advantage of the new watchOS 10 features.

With the Apple Watch Series 9, Apple is finally upgrading the chip, which is more than welcome. However, the company is advancing towards the fabrication of 3nm chips, which might assist the wearable even more if Apple chooses to employ them over 5nm chips. Nonetheless, Apple’s decision to use 5nm chips for the Apple Watch makes sense because it does not require a large amount of power, while efficiency is a different concern.
