Apple has begun selling a three-meter Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable for $159 or ₹15900, which is quite expensive. Although that may appear to be a lot of money for a USB cable, there’s more to unpack here. Three meters is equal to 9.8 feet.

This is currently the longest Thunderbolt 4 cable available. Others, such as OWC, Belkin, and Plugable, sell up to two meters of cable (about 6.6 feet). This is the length of the standard that Intel and its partners publish.

Those, on the other hand, are a combination of active and passive cables. Apple’s 1.8-meter Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable was dismantled, revealing that it’s an active wire with chips and timers to increase the signal over a longer distance. These chips can increase the price and technically exceed the spec. Even though it’s a cable, substantial thought and engineering went into it.

Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable also appears to be a braided

Apple’s new MacBook Pro Magsafe cables are braided, albeit in white sleeving, and they feel pleasant and robust. This sleeving can also assist minimize tangling, which is beneficial when running a 9.8-foot cable across a room.

All of this is to argue that, despite the price tag’s immediate shock, this cable isn’t particularly overpriced. Yes, it’s pricey, but there’s some extra tech and other perks. Apple is the only game in town right now, but other suppliers may ultimately catch up with less expensive alternatives. The same cannot be said of a $19 polishing cloth.

Despite exceeding the requirement in length, Apple’s other promises, such as a 40Gbps speed, are in line with what you’d anticipate from Thunderbolt 4. (Apple, like Cake, aims for both distance and speed.) This connection also has 100 watts of electricity, so it can charge a MacBook or iPad Pro, as well as DisplayPort video output for connecting to a display (like Apple’s Studio Display or Pro Display XDR).

The three-meter Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable is currently available in various places and will ship between May 13 and May 20 with standard free shipping. Apple’s 1.8-meter cable is $129 or ₹12900 for individuals who don’t want such a long cord, and other suppliers often sell for even less.

Belkin, for example, charges $69.99 for a two-meter active cable. However, if you need to snake a cable across or around a room, Apple is the only option. That’s the cost of reaching out completely.
