Apple Testing Google Gemini Integration in iOS 18.4 Beta

Apple recently released the iOS 18.4 beta 1 update for supported iPhones, with a stable version due to release in April. Apple Intelligence features like integration with ChatGPT were already introduced in previous iOS 18 updates. Apple revealed its collaboration with OpenAI last year but executive Craig Federighi suggested other AI models would be integrated. Now, a new beta implies Apple is going to integrate Google’s Gemini into Apple Intelligence.

Apple Reportedly Working on Google Gemini Integration for Apple Intelligence in iOS 18.4

On the backend of the iOS 18.4 beta update, MacRumors analyst Aaron Perris found references to third-party artificial intelligence models such as “Google” and “OpenAI.” This signals that Apple is setting the stage to add Google’s Gemini in parallel with ChatGPT. Similar to ChatGPT, Gemini would serve as an AI chatbot inside of Apple Intelligence if deployed. Perris also posted a screenshot from Apple’s backend that further fueled speculation over third-party AI integrations on the way. But it’s still unclear exactly when Gemini will come to Luminosity—the feature could either land with iOS 18.4 or be pushed back to a later update.

Allowing for third-party AIs to be an option means there would also be more freedom in which AI users use as their assistant. A dev blog on ChatGPT shows you how Apple Intelligence handles user queries. Incorporating Gemini could enhance the range of AI tools available to users, offering different generative AI models while still working within Apple’s own ecosystem. Beyond the AI tweaks, iOS 18.4 Beta 1 is bundled with new features. These feature queue notifications, additional language support for Apple Intelligence, and more widgets.

Apple has also now confirmed that the iPhone 15 Pro models will be getting Visual Intelligence via an Action Button and Control Center toggle, a feature that’s strangely missing. As Apple Intelligence continues to develop and more integrations are added, it seems that Apple is carving out a path for the future of personalized and empowering AI assistance for its users in the upcoming months and years. There is no timeframe for Gemini’s rollout, however, and it may not be implemented until it senses it has been further refined in subsequent updates of iOS 18.
