Apple has introduced a fresh Apple Sports application designed to offer sports enthusiasts instant access to real-time scores, statistics, odds, and more directly from their device’s lock screen. This new Sports app is free of charge and currently devoid of advertisements, catering initially to iPhone users in the US, UK, and Canada.

More About the Apple Sports App

Apple has shared that their new Sports app now includes a variety of leagues like MLS, NBA, NCAA basketball, NHL, Bundesliga, LaLiga, Ligue 1 Premier League and Serie A. They’ve also mentioned plans to add major leagues in the future seasons such as MLF, NFL, NCAAF, NWSL and WNBA.

Eddy Cue from the Apple Services department explained that the goal behind the Sports app was to offer sports enthusiasts access to scores and stats tailored to their interests. He stated; “Our aim with Apple Sports is to provide fans with what they desire – an app that provides access to scores and statistics. Apple Sports can be downloaded for free, from the App Store. Allows users to easily keep up with their teams and leagues.”

Users have been able to check real-time scores by navigating within the Apple TV app or using third-party apps, like MLB’s, which also showed scores on the lock screen or Dynamic Island since iOS 16. According to an Engadget report Apple claims that their new approach provides “a quick way to stay updated with your teams and leagues.” Additionally, the new Apple Sports app allows users to instantly stream their preferred league by directing them to Apple TV Plus or a streaming service, for live game watching.

In the meantime, Apple CEO Tim Cook expressed his enthusiasm for the new app in a post on X, mentioning, “The new Apple Sports iPhone app makes following your favorite teams and leagues fast and simple. I can’t wait to use it during the 2024 @MLS Season, which kicks off tonight between Inter Miami CF and Real Salt Lake on #MLSSeasonPass!”
