Apple Preps Four New M4 Macs for October Release

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has today highlighted how Apple is now “rapidly testing” four new Mac models featuring the M4 chip. They are based on the project which led to the first batch of Apple silicon earlier this year and will likely come dressed in an updated MacBook Pro, Mac mini, or iMac sometime around October 2024.

Apple To Launch New M4 Macs

According to some developer logs the four new Macs are built around base-level M4 chips. All four of the models came with 10-core CPUs and GPUs, except for one that sported an 8-core CPU and GPU – something not seen in previous M4 chips. All models include either 16 or 32GB of Unified Memory, so whatever model you choose, you will be well provided for in terms of performance and efficiency.

As for performance, the 256GB and 512GB variants of iPad Pro are powered by an M4 chip which comes with a 9-core CPU and a 10-core GPU. Available in the 1TB and 2TB iPad Pro Models, the M4 on these tablets is more advanced with a total of 10 cores each for both CPU and GPU. This higher-end M4 chip will be featured in some of the new Macs.

No information on the higher-end M4 Pro and M4 Max has been shared by Gurman at this stage, but they are said to be reserved for more powerful configurations like new high-tier Mac mini models and future 14-inch MacBook Pros as well as an updated 16-inch model. These advanced chips would offer additional CPU and GPU cores and support for greater maximum memory.

It remains unclear whether Apple is focusing solely on introducing lower-end models with the standard M4 chip or if M4 Pro and M4 Max models are also planned but were not mentioned in the developer logs. Previous rumors have suggested that both the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models will be updated, and Gurman has indicated that the new, slimmer Mac mini will offer options with both M4 and M4 Pro chips.
