The iPad could get OLED display technology from Apple as early as next year, according to widespread expectations. However, according to a recent revelation by Omdia researchers, the release date for Apple’s MacBook Pros with OLED displays has been delayed until at least 2027.
According to the rumour, Apple is still on schedule to update both the 11-inch and 12.9-inch models of the iPad Pro with OLED at some point in 2019. Currently, Apple’s mini-LED display technology is used in the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, while an LED display is used in the 11-inch iPad Pro. The iPad Pro would switch to OLED sometime in 2019 if this rumour comes true.
Both Bloomberg and analyst Ross Young have reported on Apple’s plans to switch the iPad to OLED, which has been supported by this schedule. According to the most recent Bloomberg story, Apple is preparing a “major iPad Pro revamp” for spring 2024 that will have an updated design and OLED panels.
Things are a little less apparent when it comes to the MacBook lineup. According to the story from this week, the MacBook Pro was initially planned to switch to OLED by 2026. However, the company just decided to postpone this update until at least 2027.
Apple currently offers MacBooks with mini-LED or LCD panels. LCD screens are used in the MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro. Mini-LED screens are used in the MacBook Pro’s 14-inch and 16-inch models.
Despite the information in today’s article, according to other sources, Apple will introduce an OLED-display MacBook Air as early as 2024. Sources, including analysts Ross Young and Ming-Chi Kuo, have reported this.
As a refresher, mini-LED is an OLED substitute that is in some aspects inferior to OLED and superior in others. The substantially greater black levels of OLED screens over mini-LED, according to many experts, make them preferable. This is true because the pixels—which are what generate the light—can be completely turned off to create a dark image when that is what is required.
