According to one study, as Apple continues to diversify its product production plans by transferring its supply chain away from China, Vietnam is projected to acquire a competitive advantage for MacBook models. The technology behemoth may begin mass production of its portable Mac family in the region in 2023, with assistance from none other than Foxconn, its largest iPhone assembly partner.
According to a Nikkei Asia story, MacBook manufacture will begin in Vietnam in May 2023, citing insiders close to Apple’s plans. As troubles in China, where the majority of iPhone production occurs, take their toll, Apple presumably wished to minimise any implications of these hiccups, which might have included product launch delays.
According to the article, Foxconn was awarded a licence in 2021 to begin MacBook production in Vietnam, where it will build a $270 million plant. The production facility will accommodate both MacBook and iPad versions, but no specific models were mentioned in the report. Fukang Technology will develop the new factory, which will be located in the northern Vietnamese province of Bac Giang.
Soon after manufacturing begins, the new plant will be able to produce approximately eight million laptops and tablets each year. While this is unconfirmed, it is plausible that Apple did not release the M2 Pro and M2 Max MacBook Pro models in 2022 due to this precise reason: transferring manufacture to Vietnam.
Apple is expected to release the new family in 2023.
A larger product, such as a MacBook, has more internal and external components, which may explain why Apple is taking so long to shift its supply chain to another location. These complicated challenges could also explain why the Vietnamese plant can only produce eight million MacBook and iPad products in a year.
In addition to the MacBook line, Apple may begin mass-producing HomePod units in the nation. The majority of iPhone manufacture will continue in China, but it will not be long until Apple switches production to Vietnam and India in a few years.
