Apple M3 Series vs. M2 Series: Unveiling Performance, Efficiency, and Capabilities

Apple has introduced the M3 series, which includes the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips, setting new benchmarks for Mac performance, efficiency, and capabilities. The shift from M2 to M3 is marked by significant improvements, including a move to a 3nm process and a redesigned GPU. While Apple has emphasized the comparison with the M1 series, it’s crucial to understand the M3’s advancements over the M2.

M2 vs. M3

M3 Series

The M3 chip is a step as it utilizes a 3nm manufacturing process and increases the transistor count from 20 billion to 25 billion, which is a 25% boost. According to tests single core tasks see a 17% improvement and multi-core tasks experience a 21% enhancement compared to the M2. The GPU performance as measured by Metal benchmarks demonstrates a 15% improvement. The M3 introduces a GPU architecture called Dynamic Caching, which enhances GPU memory allocation and overall energy efficiency.

Despite having the 16-core Neural Engine, as the M2, the M3s utilization of the 3nm process allows for efficient execution of machine learning tasks. Similar to the M2 the M3 has 24GB of memory. Leverages the new process for more efficient memory bandwidth utilization. The M3 excels in energy efficiency by delivering performance without increasing power consumption.

M3 Pro vs. M2 Pro

The M3 Pro, despite fewer transistors (37 billion vs. M2 Pro’s 40 billion), leverages 3nm technology for moderate performance improvements. In single-core tasks, the M3 Pro shows an 18% improvement, with a modest 8% improvement in multi-core tasks. The M3 Pro features either five or six high-performance cores and six energy-efficient cores, indicating a focus on high performance with power efficiency.

GPU cores are reduced from M2 Pro’s 16 or 19 to 14 or 18 in the M3 Pro, resulting in a 5% decrease in GPU performance. The new GPU architecture introduces hardware-accelerated ray tracing, mesh shading, and Dynamic Caching. The M3 Pro’s unified memory bandwidth is 150GB/s, compared to the M2 Pro’s 200GB/s, potentially impacting tasks dependent on rapid memory access. Overall, the M3 Pro offers advantages in CPU performance but a step back in GPU performance.

M3 Max vs. M2 Max

The M3 Max showcases improvements in both CPU and GPU performance compared to its predecessor, the M2 Max. An increase from 67 billion transistors in the M2 Max to a count of 92 billion in the M3 Max benchmark tests reveals an uplift of 18% in single-core performance and an even more substantial gain of 38% in multi-core performance.

Additionally, there is an increase in GPU cores from 38 in the M2 Max to now having 40 cores, in the M3 Max resulting in an improvement of approximately 14% according to GPU benchmarks. The M3 Max comes with cutting-edge capabilities such, as hardware-accelerated ray tracing, mesh shading, and Dynamic Caching. It can handle memory tasks with its support for up to 128GB of memory. Compared to the M2 Max, the M3 Max offers an improvement, in graphical performance.

In summary, the M3 series brings substantial improvements over the M2, with each variant offering specific enhancements in performance, energy efficiency, and features. The decision to upgrade depends on individual needs and the demands of specific workflows.
