**Apple’s usually airtight security just sprung a leak — and it came from Apple itself.** Hidden inside the [macOS 26.3 kernel extensions](https://www.gizmochina.com/2026/02/21/macos-26-3-leak-hints-at-budget-macbook-and-new-studio-displays-ahead-of-march-4-event/) released last week, developers uncovered references to three unreleased devices: **J700, J427, and J527**. With Apple’s “special Apple Experience” event scheduled for March 4, this code dump just confirmed the hardware lineup.

## What the Code Reveals

**J700**: The long-rumored **budget MacBook** powered by the A18 Pro chip (from iPhone 16 Pro), not M-series silicon. Expected pricing: **$599–$799** — Apple’s cheapest laptop in years, positioned below the MacBook Air. Reports suggest vibrant colors (yellow, green, blue, pink), aluminum chassis, and a sub-13-inch display. This marks the return of plain “MacBook” branding last seen in 2019.

**J427 & J527**: Two distinct **Apple Studio Display 2** variants. The current model launched March 2022 and needs refreshing. Leaks point to **mini-LED backlighting, 120Hz ProMotion, HDR support, and an A19 chip** (up from the ancient A13 Bionic). The mystery: why two models? Speculation ranges from different sizes (27″ vs 32″) to feature tiers (standard vs Pro).

## Why This Matters

Apple hasn’t competed sub-$800 since discontinuing the 12-inch MacBook. The MacBook Air starts at $999, leaving budget-conscious students buying Chromebooks. A **$599 MacBook with A18 Pro performance** (slightly outperforms M1) changes that calculus entirely — making it viable for everyday tasks while undercutting every current Mac laptop.

The dual Studio Displays are equally intriguing. If Apple ships **mini-LED 120Hz**, it brings MacBook Pro-level screen tech to standalone monitors for the first time. One variant could hit a lower price; the other might go premium (32-inch?).

## The March 4 “Experience”

Apple’s event wording — “special Apple Experience” rather than keynote — suggests hands-on media sessions in New York, London, and Shanghai instead of livestream. That format fits colorful budget MacBooks and refreshed displays: products people need to touch and see.

Notably absent from macOS 26.3: **M5 Pro/Max MacBook Pros, refreshed MacBook Air, Mac Studio**. Rumored for the same timeframe, Apple could enable support via macOS 26.3.1 point update closer to launch.

The leaks, timing, and code all point one direction: **March 4 will be bigger than expected.**
