Apple is cutting the production of the 2022 iPhone SE due to low demand

According to a claim from Nikkei Asia quoting anonymous sources, Apple is reportedly curtailing manufacturing for the new third-generation iPhone SE just weeks after its launch due to uncertainties induced by ongoing global strife and alleged low demand.

According to the source, Apple has told suppliers that manufacturing of the iPhone SE will be slashed by two to three million units this quarter due to “weaker-than-expected demand.”

Unlike the fall in iPhone SE production due to low demand, Apple is also reducing production of the iPhone 13 series, although sources close to the situation told Nikkei Asia that the reduction is due to seasonal demand changes. According to the source, Apple is also reducing AirPod production, but it does not indicate which model or models will be affected.

In response to the storey, respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo tweeted today that he is lowering his 2022 shipments projections for the next iPhone SE from 25 to 30 million to roughly 15 to 20 million units. Low demand, according to Kuo, caused the fewer shipments.

Shanghai lockdown doesn't affect the iPhone SE production. However, the new iPhone SE demand is lower than expected (the delivery status "in stock" as one of the proofs), and I cut my shipment estimation in 2022 to 15-20M (vs. 25-30M previously).

The new iPhone SE was unveiled earlier this month, with the same 4.7-inch form factor as the previous model but with 5G support. The new iPhone SE is the only iPhone in the lineup that still has a physical Home Button and Touch ID, but it now has the A15 Bionic chip, which is faster and more energy-efficient. The iPhone SE has a starting price of $429 for 64GB of storage.
