Guide to Using Writing Tools

This guide explores the various functionalities of Writing Tools, their applications, and the requirements for access. While numerous AI tools generate content, Writing Tools is not intended for that purpose. Instead, it focuses on enhancing, modifying, and refining your existing text. Users must write their content first, as Apple does not currently offer text generation features.  However, future updates may introduce such capabilities, especially with the expected ChatGPT integration later this year. Writing Tools can aid in checking spelling, grammar, word choice, tone adjustments, and text summarization.

How to Access Writing Tools

In apps like Notes or Pages, to get at the Writing Tools, you select the text, then either tap or right-click (depending on your platform) and there they are. Applications like Notes include a dedicated Writing Tools interface within their toolbar, making access straightforward. Generally, you can reach Writing Tools by selecting text to reveal available options for proofreading, rewriting, and summarizing.

Proofreading Features

Beyond spell checks, Writing Tools examines word choice and grammar. It corrects frequent mistakes such as please/pleas or they’re/their/there and effect/affect. It will not help reading over your work to catch every punctuation error, but it can automatically add the missing periods, fix the quotation marks, or insert a necessary comma. It respects shorthand and helps out with phrases; for example, it changes “luv” to “love.” Unfortunately, it ends up being an all-or-nothing correction creating a new text in the same style as original content and not pinpointing where errors are made so it can be hard to see when you do corrections on your campaigns.

Rewriting and Summarization

The Rewrite feature refines your text, offering tonal styles such as Friendly, Professional, and Concise. Users can select text and choose the base Rewrite option to obtain a more polished version. Writing Tools also provides options to summarize longer texts, making them accessible for lengthy articles, PDFs or detailed notes with features like Summary, Key Points, List, and Table.

Availability and Requirements

Writing Tools are available anywhere text appears in any Apple Intelligence app on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. It is available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, any iPhone 16 model, or a M series iPad or Mac. It is in beta now and will have general updates in October. While Writing Tools is on the whole a helpful aid in error snooping, features like switching between corrections one by one and getting more detailed summaries would greatly increase its effectiveness.
