Few people could forget the sight of previous MacBook models’ illuminated Apple logos whether they saw them in coffee shops, on campuses, or at a gathering at a friend’s house. Unfortunately, the illuminated logo had to be removed from the 2015 12-inch MacBook due to its incredibly tiny profile, and Apple has not added it to any other model afterwards. Fortunately, there is a chance that the famous element will come back.
Electronic Devices With Backlit Partial Mirror Structures is the name of a patent that the USPTO published this week. The patent was originally filed in May 2022.
The new strategy Apple plans to use to reinstate the luminous logo on upcoming MacBooks is described in the next section.
According to Patently Apple, the patent application covers any Apple electronic device made of glass, metal, polymer, ceramic, fibre-composite material, other materials, crystalline materials like sapphire, and/or combinations of these elements. A MacBook falls into this category because metal is used in the majority of its construction. It should be exceedingly tough for Apple to insert a complete display sheet given how thin the aluminium lid of current-generation portable Macs is; the business may employ mini-LED diodes instead, which take up less room and area.
It is unknown how the business can accomplish this as mini-LED backlighting will cost more than LED technology, which Apple previously utilized to light up the logo. We do not think the tech giant will consider it for very long if the price is too exorbitant for something that does not significantly improve future MacBooks.
