Rumors About Apple Flip-Style Foldable iPhone
It’s important to note that Apple’s exploration of designs doesn’t necessarily mean they have plans for release. Instead, it seems like the company is experimenting with this form factor. These foldable iPhone models are not part of Apple’s production plans for 2022 or 2025. If the project progresses there is a possibility of a release in fall 2026. However, any further development of this project will depend on Apple’s standards. It could be canceled at any stage.
The tech giant has been interested in technology since 2018 when they initially aimed to create a thin foldable device that would have a similar profile to current iPhone models when closed. However, challenges related to battery and display technology impeded progress. Notably, Apple considered a design where the display would be, on the outside when the device is folded resembling the Huawei Mate X flip-style variant.
There were concerns, about the durability of this approach, which also made the design process more complex. During 2020, the company decided to pause their development of an iPhone and instead shifted their focus, towards a foldable iPad, which is rumored to be released in 2026. Now it seems that the company is actively pursuing both projects at the time.
Currently, Apple engineers are concentrating on overcoming technical hurdles such as eliminating display creases and designing a hinge mechanism that allows the screen to lie completely flat. This effort aims to ensure seamless usability, particularly with accessories like the Apple Pencil. While LG and Samsung Display are reportedly involved in the foldable iPad project, the screen suppliers for the foldable iPhone remain unspecified.
