Apple is developing an in-house 100MP camera sensor with LOFIC technology targeting a 2028 release, according to Weibo tipster reports. The custom sensor promises up to 20 stops of dynamic range—rivaling high-end cinema cameras—while reducing Apple’s reliance on Sony for iPhone imaging components.

LOFIC Technology Breakthrough

LOFIC (Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor) technology allows each pixel to store varying amounts of light based on scene brightness, capturing detail in both bright highlights and dark shadows within a single frame. This eliminates traditional HDR stacking artifacts caused by movement in multi-exposure shots.

Apple’s patent describes a stacked sensor design with dedicated light-capture and processing layers handling real-time noise reduction. The three-transistor pixel structure with current memory circuits cancels thermal noise before images leave the sensor die.

Strategic Independence Move

Apple currently sources camera sensors exclusively from Sony, though Samsung will enter the supply chain in 2027 with three-layer stacked sensor production. By developing custom sensors, Apple gains complete control over its imaging pipeline, enabling tighter hardware-software integration—a hallmark of the company’s approach with A-series chips and custom modems.

The 100MP sensor will reportedly support variable aperture technology debuting in iPhone 18 Pro next year, giving Apple ample time to refine the custom solution. The company already demonstrated specialized imaging capabilities with custom equipment for its F1 film recording ProRes lossless format.

Playing Catch-Up to Android

While Apple pursues this technology, Android manufacturers are moving faster. Chinese brands including Honor, Xiaomi, and Huawei plan LOFIC adoption in 2026 flagships using Sony sensors, while OPPO and Vivo develop their own implementations. Samsung’s 200MP LOFIC with 1/1.1-inch sensor arrives in 2026-27.

Despite trailing competitors, Apple historically adopts technologies later but executes them better, focusing on refinement over first-mover advantage.
