The Cupertino giant’s Peak Performance event was a show that portrayed Apple’s independence to Intel or AMD and how they can make chips using ARM architecture to beak the x86 CPUs in 2022. It started to switch to its in-house silicon long back in 2020 and finally this year, their promised 2 years of transition will finish.
Almost all devices are now powered by Apple Silicon except for the iMac Pro and Mac Pro, while Apple did confirm that the next device they plan to upgrade will be the Mac Pro. It is being reported that the iPhone maker will be equipping this upcoming workstation to fuse two M1 Ultra chipsets to make a single powerful solution.
This rightfully makes sense as Apple will try to break all records with this and make the Mac Pro the best workstation desktop the world is looking for. This rumour comes from the leak of Majin Bu who suspects that Apple is really working hard to combine two M1 Ultras together for the upcoming Mac Pro 2022 using some kind of bridge to connect both of them.
Apple has already stated about UltraFusion, know here how it works and the technology behind it, also codename of the unnamed chipset is referred to as Redfern. If combining two M1 Max chipsets, that were already very powerful, to form a single M1 Ultra chip made it sport up to 114 billion transistors, 20-core CPU and 64-core GPU.
Now, suppose you double this amount, using two M1 Ultras will result in a whopping 40 core CPU and 128 core GPU, making the biggest Apple Silicon ever. Interestingly, the previous predictions from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also stated an unnamed chipset to be used in the Mac Pro with the exact same specifications.
If somehow Apple manages to do so what we are guessing on paper, this will be an SoC we have never seen or experienced yet. With increased unified RAM support of up to 256GB and a memory bandwidth of up to 1.6TB/s, this will indeed be an SoC of its own class, 16 times bigger than the M1.
Also, we could expect good thermals from this chip as the M1 Ultra at 60W TDP is giving great results, so, Apple has enough room to push even further. While we have seen the M1 Ultra beating a Ryzen Threadripper 3990XÂ in single-core and is just 4.5% slower in multi-core, so two of them could shatter all record possible, we have to wait till September to see this chip in action on new Mac Pro.
