As we all know, automotive infotainment systems aren’t great, and we don’t expect things to improve with the transition to electric vehicles. As a possible answer, Apple aims to turn its popular CarPlay system into a whole vehicle interface.
Apple gave the general public (and developers) an early peek of the next-gen CarPlay experience at its annual developer conference today, claiming that it will be available in late 2023.
Apple is aiming to redefine the driving experience with a new CarPlay app that better integrates the forms and functionality of your car’s infotainment system with your iPhone
The business is keeping quiet about what this reinvented version of the app will be able to achieve — those details are expected to be revealed later next year — but it has hinted that it will effectively turn your phone into the “core” of the in-cabin systems.
According to the business, this updated CarPlay would source material and information to several screens within the vehicle, as well as operate in-cabin systems like the radio and thermostat directly through CarPlay.
It can also use its user interface to replace the factory-installed instrument cluster displays, allowing you to read your fuel gauge. Users may also customize their screens with a selection of widgets, skins, and apps.
