Apple AR Glasses with Metalens technology headed for a 2026 release

Latest rumors has it that Apple AR Glasses are also being developed by the tech giant. As we know, at its WWDC 2023 event, Apple is anticipated to unveil its augmented reality headset along with iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and other noteworthy updates. However, a well-known analyst also predicts that the company will release its metalens-equipped Apple AR Glasses in 2026 or 2027.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo hypothesises that Apple is developing new metalens technology to replace the conventional plastic covers on a variety of products in a post on Medium. We have previously heard reprts that the company will also bring the technology to future iPhone and iPad models. The metalens covers will be used for Face ID in iPhone and iPad Pro models starting in 2024, according to Kuo’s predictions.

Metalens is a flat cover that concentrates light using metasurfaces and the covers are thinner than what Apple currently uses. According to Kuo, the iPhone maker will use the metalens covers for its Apple AR Glasses no later than 2026 if production proceeds as expected. In the upcoming years, Apple will also use the same lens in its cameras.

This is the first time we’ve heard specifics about the Apple AR Glasses’ metal covers, but surely it wont be the last.

Prior to concentrating on its AR Headset, the tech giant reportedly put the development of its Apple AR Glasses on hold. Although no precise information regarding the launch date has been provided to date, it is anticipated that Apple’s AR Headset will be unveiled at the WWDC 2023 event and will be available to consumers later this year.

The Apple AR Glasses are much more practical for everyday use, whereas the AR headset is more of a device you would only use at home. The earlier features should now place more of an emphasis on utilities like messages, calls, and emails. On the other hand, the AR Headset ought to put more of an emphasis on entertainment. As previously mentioned, the headset will place a strong emphasis on entertainment and gaming.
