Mark Gurman says Apple is considering shipping a more affordable version of its next-gen AR/VR headset by including it in an iPhone or Mac via Bloomberg. Before the original Vision Pro even shipped, Apple had been moving resources to develop this cheaper model – codenamed N107 internally – according to Gurman.

More About the Affordable Apple Vision Headset

A narrower field of view is even expected compared to the Vision Pro, while processing power is likely to depend on a connected device like an iPhone or a Mac. The use of fused deposition modeling is also meant to reduce the cost of making standalone processing components, which could mean a lower price tag for this headset than we’ve seen in various leaks.

Gurman highlights that Apple is currently navigating challenges in cost reduction while ensuring that key features are retained. If it clears those hurdles, Apple could launch the cheaper headset by 2025 at the earliest. The timeline comes in conjunction with Apple’s existing planning outlined on the Vision Pro ahead of last year’s formal unveiling.

Although depth, obviously cost is important, the report also reassures Apple fans that the company still has plans to push further into the iPad of headsets stance. He also mentions that the company is working on the second-generation Vision Pro, which is internally known as N109. This will apparently be a lookalike to the current Vision Pro but with slightly faster processing and enhancements to its external cameras.

Despite that, Apple is gearing up to perpetuate dual low-cost entry and high-end immersive spatial computing by supposedly tackling Vision Pro 2 and doing so while still targeting timing around or before the close of 2026.

Apple’s dual-headset strategy is a combination of working on a cheaper device that still requires another Apple product and further progress on the high-end Vision Pro tier. The initiatives are part of an effort by Apple to recruit a new generation of consumers more comfortable with virtual and augmented reality technologies.
