Apple’s rumored 5G modem might be available by 2024, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon claimed today at the MWC 2023 conference.
During a conversation with Joanna Stern of The Wall Street Journal, Amon remarked, “We think that Apple will make their modem in 2024, but if they need ours, they know where to find us.” Tech analyst Carolina Milanesi confirmed his statement.
Apple Devices Receive 5G Modems From Qualcomm – What’s in the future?
Apple products, including all the iPhone 14 range, presently only receive their 5G modems from Qualcomm. Nevertheless, it has long been speculated that the brand is working on its own 5G processor as an alternative internally. According to a recent story by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple will initially employ the chip in just one new device, maybe a high-end iPhone model, and will gradually phase out Qualcomm’s modems over three years.
According to Amon’s timeline of 2024, Apple’s 5G technology might debut in at least one iPhone 16 version. It’s also conceivable that the company will first include the 5G processor in a product with a smaller volume, like an iPad. Although the performance of Apple’s chip in comparison to Qualcomm’s modems is unknown, switching to an internal design would probably eventually result in lower production costs for the company.
In the process, it is anticipated that all iPhone 15 models will come with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X70 modem, which provides faster cellular speeds and greater power efficiency than the Snapdragon X65 featured in all iPhone 14 models. While Apple gradually switches to its 5G processor, Qualcomm recently introduced its most recent Snapdragon X75 modem, which may still be employed in some of its following devices.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo tweeted today that whether Apple’s 5G chip will be included in the iPhone 16 variants is still unknown. According to Kuo, the choice would be based on Apple’s ability to resolve technical issues with mmWave and satellite communication.
