Apple 2022 MacBook Air will be featuring the same M1 chip instead of the new M2

Apple 2022 MacBook Air will be featuring the same M1 chip instead of the new M2

According to the latest forecasts of an analyst, we may be in for a dismal product unveiling after prior speculations suggested the 2022 MacBook Air would have some noteworthy upgrades. The future portable Mac may have the same M1 chip as the 2020 model, rather than the M2 chip, which is reported to have more GPU cores.

Ming-Chi Kuo has made the most recent forecasts for the 2022 MacBook Air, claiming that mass manufacturing will begin in the second or third quarter of the year. Kuo had stated that mass production will begin in the third quarter, but new information suggests that the product could be released sooner. Unfortunately, even if it arrives ahead of schedule, it will not include the upgrades suggested by the analyst.

Despite prior rumours, the 2022 MacBook Air is not slated to include a mini-LED display. We can understand Apple backing away from this decision because it would prefer to make this machine more accessible to the general public, which is impossible to do if a costly component like mini-LED is employed. While some customers may choose to disregard the display upgrade, a large number of consumers upgrade to a newer model to benefit from the performance boost, which may or may not be included in the package.

Predictions for new MacBook Air in 2022:
1. Mass production in late 2Q22 or 3Q22
2. Processor: M1 chip
3. No mini-LED display
4. All-new form factor design
5. More color options

— 郭明錤 (Ming-Chi Kuo) (@mingchikuo) March 9, 2022

If the M1 is used instead of the M2 in the 2022 MacBook Air, it would be more cost-effective to purchase the prior model, as the current-generation MacBook Air has identical internals. A new form factor is also expected. To put it another way, we should expect a design update, which may or may not include the top-notch.

In addition to the design update, the 2022 MacBook Air may come in additional colours, similar to the M1 iMac, which may appeal to the mainstream customer, but those knowledgeable with the internals may pass.

A lighter chassis, a MagSafe charging port, and a handful of USB 4 connections may also be added, providing users with more options. We surely hope Kuo’s projections change in the coming weeks because recommending a portable Mac with only a design tweak and a new coat of paint would not be sufficient.
