Anwar El Ghazi has joined German club Mainz as a free agent after leaving PSV Eindhoven. The winger has signed a one-year deal with Mainz and will be able to play in the Bundesliga since free agents can still be registered.

El Ghazi featured for Aston Villa until 2022, including a loan spell at Everton which didn’t work out. The player didn’t want to leave Villa, but since he wasn’t in the plans of Steven Gerrard at the time, he was forced to find a solution to further his career. And that route led him back to the Netherlands, signing for PSV Eindhoven.

The 28-year-old has signed a one-year deal with the Bundesliga club with the option to extend for a further year. The former Netherlands international will be wearing the number 34 shirt for his new club.

He was linked with a move to Manchester United after the off-pitch issues surrounding Jadon Sancho and Antony. Both wingers are currently unavailable and Anwar El Ghazi could have been a short-term solution, having been at Ajax formerly.

But, Manchester United decided not to sign the player and this led to him choosing to sign for Mainz. Their fortune has not been favourable thus far, since they sit at the bottom of the table with only one point from a possible 12 in their opening four league matches.
