The Controversy and Legal Battle

The transfer saga surrounding Anwar Ali began when he decided to terminate his four-year loan agreement with Mohun Bagan Super Giant just one year into the deal. This abrupt decision led to a legal standoff, with Mohun Bagan asserting their rights over the player. Anwar Ali, on the other hand, sought a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the AIFF’s Players’ Status Committee (PSC) to enable his move to a new club.

The PSC initially declared the termination of Anwar Ali’s contract as unjust. However, on August 10, 2024, the committee issued the NOC, allowing the transfer to East Bengal to proceed. Despite this, the legal case is far from over, as the PSC is set to hear all parties involved again on August 22 to issue a final ruling.

A Unique Clause in the Agreement

One of the most notable aspects of Anwar Ali’s transfer to East Bengal is the inclusion of a unique clause in the contract. This clause stipulates that if Anwar Ali is fined due to any issues arising from this transfer, the financial burden will be shared equally between the player and East Bengal. Delhi FC, the selling club, will not be responsible for any portion of the fine.

According to a source familiar with the agreement, which was signed on July 10, 2024, this type of clause is unprecedented in Indian football contracts. The specific wording of the clause, labeled 3.4, states, “In case there is any fine imposed on the player due to this transfer, the buying club and the player will be liable for the same in the ratio of 50:50. However, the selling club will provide every assistance and cooperation in defending any proceedings and appeals arising from or in connection with adjudication and imposition of such fine.”

This special clause reflects the complexity of the situation surrounding Anwar Ali’s transfer and highlights the potential risks involved for both the player and East Bengal.

Anwar Ali’s Anticipated Debut

As Anwar Ali begins his journey with East Bengal, fans are eagerly anticipating his first appearance in the iconic red and gold jersey. The star defender’s arrival has generated excitement among supporters, who are keen to see him bolster the team’s defense.

While there were hopes that Ali might feature in East Bengal’s upcoming AFC Champions League Two preliminary tie, it seems unlikely that he will be match-ready in time for that fixture. However, the club is expected to make a decision soon regarding his registration for the prestigious Durand Cup 2024.

Anwar Ali’s transfer to East Bengal marks a significant moment in Indian football, not only due to the player’s talent but also because of the unique circumstances surrounding the deal. The inclusion of a special clause in the transfer agreement adds an intriguing layer to the situation, potentially setting a precedent for future transfers in Indian football. As the legal battle continues and fans await Anwar Ali’s debut, this transfer will be closely watched by football enthusiasts across the nation.
