A Long-Awaited Release

Kashyap’s directorial career began with Black Friday (2004), but his journey into filmmaking started with Paanch, which was shot before his debut feature. Unfortunately, the film never made it to cinemas due to controversial content, including violence, abusive language, and its sensitive subject matter. In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, producer Tutu Sharma confirmed that Paanch will finally see the light of day after being kept under wraps for more than two decades.

“The film was banned and the negatives have slightly deteriorated. The process of restoring them has already started. As soon as it’s ready, we’ll release Paanch,” Sharma revealed. He assured fans that the movie would be released in cinemas within the next six months, marking a major milestone for Kashyap and the film industry.

Challenges and Triumphs

The journey to releasing Paanch has not been an easy one. Following objections from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) due to its gritty content, the film remained locked in a vault for years. Sharma elaborated on the hurdles, stating, “The issues (with the Central Board of Film Certification) were resolved. But then we faced some more challenges; hence, the film was lying on the cans.”

However, the changing landscape of cinema, with an increasing interest in re-runs of cult classics, has provided a glimmer of hope. “The trend of re-runs is here now. So, one can imagine the potential of Paanch. That’s a very encouraging sign,” Sharma noted. The film’s release is now timely, as there is a growing demand for these films, which are finding audiences in a new era of cinema appreciation.

About Paanch: A Glimpse of What Was Lost

Loosely inspired by the notorious Joshi-Abhyankar serial murders of Pune (1976-77), Paanch is a dark, gritty drama that explores crime, violence, and the consequences of a life led by lawlessness. The film features an ensemble cast led by the brilliant Kay Kay Menon, who was a part of Kashyap’s directorial debut, Black Friday. Alongside Menon, the film also starred Aditya Srivastava, Vijay Maurya, and Tejaswini Kolahpure.

While the film never made it to theatres, Kashyap’s rise in the industry is legendary, having written several successful films, including Satya (1998), Shool (1999), and Kaun (1999), before his directorial debut with Black Friday. Despite Paanch being delayed, it remained an essential piece of Kashyap’s filmmaking journey.

The Relevance of Paanch Today

As films from the 1990s and 2000s are being re-released to much fanfare, Paanch holds significant cultural weight. Its return to cinemas will be more than just a nostalgic trip; it will serve as a testament to Kashyap’s long-standing impact on contemporary cinema. Moreover, Paanch provides a raw, unfiltered look into the societal issues that remain relevant today—issues that Anurag Kashyap’s films are known for tackling.

Kay Kay Menon

With films like Kennedy awaiting release, Kashyap’s legacy as a storyteller continues to unfold, and Paanch will offer a unique window into his early days as a filmmaker.

Paanch’s release marks a defining moment in the career of Anurag Kashyap and offers a fascinating glimpse into the origins of one of India’s most groundbreaking filmmakers. After more than 20 years of waiting, fans can finally witness Paanch in all its raw, unfiltered glory. For those who have followed Kashyap’s career, the release of this film is nothing short of a cinematic event.
