Antoine Griezmann must learn to score goals under pressure at Barcelona

The Frenchman has been struggling in Barcelona and now when he is getting his preferred number 9 position he must be clinical of his finishes. Everyone takes time to settle in a team like Barcelona but now it’s the perfect time for proving his worth at the club.

It’s true that playing in a position that he wasn’t used to under Ernesto Valverde was hard especially working in a system under Diego Simeone which was completely opposite and it’s understandable that it would take the World Cup winner some time to settle in.

Under Setien things are constantly evolving and players are getting chances, playing more like a team, dominating possession and having a stronger mentality than before.

Luis Saurez was the best number 9 until he got injured for as long as 4 months along with Dembele who now is out for the whole season. Griezmann and Messi are the keys to the Barcelona attack while the young Ansu stepping up to provide a boost to the attack.

The 28-year old did show his class in a tensed situation against Ibiza where they trailed by 1-0 and it was Griezmann who won the game at the end by scoring the two crucial goals. From then on, Griezmann is happy to Barca’s new number 9 to score a lot of goals.

But then on he did not have a great time with the ball but yesterday we saw a great understanding between the Frenchman and the skipper Lione Messi, both of them are now creating chances as well as scoring, even though Messi has remained goalless for last four matches.

Yesterday’s first goal was a combination of Messi’s divine assist along with an exquisite finish from Antoine Griezmann. Messi leads the assist chart with three assists Real Betis and one yesterday. Messi is now evolving more to be a playmaker exactly what a coach could ask from his world-class player.

Leo is dropping as deep as we’ve ever seen him before and is only moving closer to goal in occasional pincer-like movements. Some might say his age is the key to his goal drought but in the true sense, his ability and vision still remain the same and is proved with his pinpoint crosses and assists.

But now when Suarez is absent Griezmann has to score for every golden opportunity he gets, especially against tougher opponents who won’t give you many chances. Griezmann missed two great chances, one which he could chip the ball over the goalkeeper or swipe the ball with his right foot to the far post.

The worst miss was the second one, a great ball from Junior Firpo, who really stole the show after being substituted off the injured Jordi Alba, there was none to oppose the Frenchman and he could have taken his time to score the goal that could have settled the game but he shot it woefully upright.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s heroics ultimately saved the game and won it for the Blaugranas, but there are harder games coming up against Napoli, Real Madrid.

Griezmann needs to really work on his finishes to help Barcelona to lift the LaLiga trophy once again and the much-awaited Champions League title in Istanbul. We hope that World Cup winner proves his worth in the number 9 position alongside Lionel Messi in the coming days.
