East Bengal have terminated the contract of Ankit Mukherjee, after misconduct shown by the player. His deal was running until 31 May, and has now been cut short by the club.
He reacted poorly after being substituted against Kerala Blasters during their game on the 3rd of February. But this is hardly anything new in football, since players are often discontent at being taken off when they feel that they can help the team. Mukherjee was asked to explain his actions by the club later on, and he posted a message on social media as a response.
Ankit Mukherjee’s contract terminated by East Bengal after refusing training
The 26-year-old explained in his statement that he was injured and that the heat of the moment got the better of him. In a separate incident, the player was fined Rs 1 lakh for dissent which further put the pressure on him.
He has refused to train with East Bengal since February 4, and has now been sacked. Stephen Constantine said he was not sure if Mukherjee would ever play for the Red and Gold club after his display of frustration. And following the club’s actions, he will play no further part with them going forward.
Fans of the club are split about the treatment that Ankit Mukherjee received. Some believe that he has been dealt with quite harshly, but internal matters could suggest otherwise.
