Angel Di Maria retired from international football on a high after winning the 2024 Copa America with Argentina. The Albiceleste successfully defended their title after winning 1-0 against Colombia in Miami.

Di Maria played a prominent role in the game, and was a constant attacking threat before eventually making way for Nicolas Otamendi towards the end. The veteran was visibly emotional as he left the field, but things turned out fine in the end for him.

The 36-year-old will play one more season at the club level with Benfica before he makes a decision on his future. While he could choose to return to Argentina, he could also hang up his boots after another year in the Portuguese top flight.

Angel Di Maria played for Argentina 145 times, scoring 31 goals, including the one that won them the 2021 Copa America and one of the goals at the 2022 World Cup final.

He retires from football as a two-time Copa America winner, a FIFA World Cup winner and the winner of the Finalissima 2022. The national team’s future is in safe hands, with Alejandro Garnacho and Nicolas Gonzalez both ready to step up to Di Maria’s position out wide.
