Over the summer, there were links that the Ukrainian could make the move to Chelsea, who were hunting for a new goalkeeper. However, they ended up signing Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal while Lunin ended up staying at Madrid.

This past season, the Madrid number two stepped up in the absence of Thibaut Courtois to help them win the LaLiga title and the Champions League. He was chosen as the starting goalkeeper by Carlo Ancelotti in spite of the club signing Kepa Arrizabalaga on loan.
His performances earned him a nomination for the Yachine Trophy, which is awarded to the best goalkeeper of the season at the Ballon d’or ceremony.
Los Blancos consider him a key part of their future and are not willing to lose him as a free agent. As a result, they will soon complete his renewal and will retain him as a key player for the future.
