Andres Iniesta celebrates his 37th birthday by extending his contract with J1 League club Vissel Kobe. The Barcelona legend now has a contract that runs until 2024, which means that he will be playing at the age of 40.
Iniesta made 77 appearances for the club since joining as a free agent from Barcelona in 2018. He has scored 16 goals and assisted 18 during that time. Iniesta captains Vissel Kobe and has won the Japanese cup in 2019, along with the Japanese Super Cup in 2020.
While he might not be at his best anymore, Andres Iniesta still has the ability to pick out a pass that nobody else sees. The midfield maestro was a one-club man up until he left Europe for Japan following his tenure with Barcelona.
Winning every trophy there is to win in club football with his boyhood club, Iniesta was named the Best Football Player in Europe in 2012. He made 674 appearances for Barcelona, scoring 57 and assisting 139 goals during his time with the club.
While it might be a day to rejoice for fans of the Spaniard, this is Iniesta’s final chapter as a player. With Gianluigi Buffon also announcing his departure from Juventus today, we are at the end of a generation in terms of footballing talents, and Iniesta is right up there with the best of the best.
