Chelsea have officially announced the departure of Andreas Christensen upon the expiry of his contract with the club. The centre-back becomes the third player to leave the club this summer, after Saul Niguez’s loan expiry and Antonio Rudiger’s free transfer to Real Madrid.

Christensen leaves Chelsea alongside Danny Drinkwater and Charly Musonda, both of whom have decided to run down their Chelsea contracts and leave the club. The transfer window is officially open and they can be registered by other clubs.

The Denmark international graduated from Chelsea’s Cobham academy, and spent several seasons on loan before eventually breaking into the first team. He was offered an extension by the club several times, but there was no agreement in the end.

He has agreed personal terms with Barcelona and is expected to join them as a free agent in the coming days. The 26-year-old scored twice during his Chelsea career, making 161 appearances. He won the Europa League, Champions League, Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup with the West London side.

Marcos Alonso is also expected to follow Andreas Christensen to Barcelona, with the left-back making his intention to return to Spain known. No formal contact has been made yet, but it seems increasingly likely that he will join Barcelona by the end of the transfer window.
