Germany’s 1990 World Cup hero, Andreas Brehme, has passed away aged 63. He scored the winning penalty for his country against Argentina, guiding his side to the iconic trophy. The cause of death has been identified as a sudden cardiac arrest by his partner.

The veteran played for Bayern Munich and Kaiserslautern in the Bundesliga, and also featured for Inter Milan. He won league titles with Bayern and Inter, and won 86 caps for the German national team, scoring eight goals during his senior national team career.

Playing as a left-back and occasionally a defensive midfielder during his 19-year long career, the defender played 622 professional games, scoring 79 goals and providing 27 recorded assists over the course of his career.

After retiring from professional football, Brehme transitioned into coaching and punditry, sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience with the next generation of players and fans. His managerial career was relatively brief, with only two spells as the head coach. He first managed Stuttgart before a spell with Unterhaching. He then worked as an assistant manager at Stuttgart in 2005 and then transitioned into an advisory role at Serbian club Vojvodina.

German football has been left mourning this year, with Franz Beckenbauer passing away earlier this year as well.
