Real Madrid succumbed to an embarrassing 0-4 loss to their eternal rivals Barcelona in the final El Clasico of this season. Real Madrid were leading the La Liga title race by 10 minutes to second-placed Sevilla and were ahead by 15 points of Barcelona. Meanwhile, Barcelona were fighting to finish in the top 4 places.
Xavi’s Barcelona turned around the whole situation as they almost ran the show at the Bernabeu. Real Madrid were missing their talismanic striker Karim Benzema but losing by such a huge margin is not an excuse.
Carlo Ancelotti had made changes in the formation which ultimately resulted in this humiliating result. The Italian has now taken the blame on himself.
Ancelotti takes the blame for Real Madrid’s embarrassing 0-4 loss to Barcelona
Ancelotti said during his post-match interview, via Marca: “We were not recognisable, everything went wrong. I told the players that [the defeat] was my fault.”
“I don’t understand it, but I’m not going into it because I don’t want to make excuses. We played very badly and we approached the game very badly.”
“We have time to gather our energy and prepare for the last two months of the season to win trophies. We would have done what we needed to do so far: nine points ahead of [Sevilla in] second and into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.”
“I’m very sad about the defeat, I’m sorry for the fans, but I have to be calm.”
