AMD’s Van Gogh APU to feature its latest ACP 5.x

New information regarding AMD’s supposedly ‘Van Gogh’ APU has appeared online. Originally when the APU first made headlines, the leaked specifications made it clear that it will offer several significant improvements over its predecessors, with an RDNA 2-based graphics core along with DDR5/LPDDR5. However, now the latest revelation suggests that the new APU will also come with a new audio processing block.

Recently the OEM posted 12 patches for its Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) driver enabling its upcoming Van Gogh APU. According to the released patches, Van Gogh will feature AMD’s new audio co-processor — ACP 5.x — with two I2S interfaces/controllers. Until now there have been no prior mentions of AMD’s ACP 5.x blocks, so it means that the Van Gogh APU will be the company’s first platform to support the new audio technology.

It is also little to no information available regarding AMD’s audio co-processor’s and all we know is that AMD’s Raven Ridge APU from 2017 relied on ACP3x. It is unclear to see what new kind of innovations the ACP 5.x will bring, however, one thing is clear that it will be better than its predecessors.

AMD’s Van Gogh is the company’s most mysterious APUs ever and is rumored to feature Zen 2 cores along with an RDNA 2-based graphics processor, and a memory controller that supports DDR5 and/or LPDDR5 memory. It also speculated that the chip will be produced using one of TSMC’s 7nm process technologies.

Its also been rumored that the architecture of Van Gogh will be similar to the custom SoCs found in Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S and Sony’s PlayStation 5 consoles, however, the exact configuration of Van Gogh is not yet known. for more information stay tuned.
