The Ryzen Z2 Extreme APU from AMD with Zen 5 & RDNA 3.5 could improve gaming handheld performance and battery Life. As it stands now, the performance of these devices ranges from basic desktop entry level at best. Well, AMD’s new APU looks to change that significantly.

Acer showed off the Nitro 7 handheld at IFA 2024, powered by AMD’s newest mobile processor, the Ryzen 8840HS; a Zen 4 core with RDNA 3 also known as Turin-based iGPU Performance, that will blow users away.

More About the AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme APU: Enhanced Performance and Battery Life

The Z2 Extreme is expected to arrive in early 2025 and will be pitched by AMD as a chip that can power ultra-high-end gaming handhelds. As Jack Huynh, AMD’s Senior VP and General Manager of Computing and Graphics division says “AMD not only strives for exceptional performance but also to lead the industry in battery life”. With these handhelds, Huynh said he hoped users could manage to play tough games such as Black Myth: Wukong for extended periods on these devices.

At large, less powerful handhelds of today struggle to achieve a long-lasting in-game experience with more graphic-intensity games. The Ryzen Z2 Extreme seeks to further this by bringing a mixed Zen 5 and Zen 5c core configuration that could be more powerful and power-efficient in the next generation of handhelds. Some initial details hint that the Z2 Extreme will run 8 cores i.e. 3 Zen 5 and the rest of them are Zen 5C cores That will also be joined by a regular Z2 APU, but not before too long it seems as carry-out and rebranded Ryzen 8040U “Hawk Point” again.

Devices such as the ASUS ROG Ally/X and Lenovo Legion Go, which currently use the Z1 Extreme chip, may upgrade to the Z2 Extreme APU in 2025. Other manufacturers, including Zotac and Antec, might also adopt the new APU in their future models. The Z2 Extreme will face competition from Intel’s Lunar Lake-based handhelds, like the MSI CLAW 8, also slated for a 2025 release.

Overall, the future of gaming handhelds looks promising with AMD and Intel pushing for more powerful and efficient chips. Although these devices may not yet rival mid-range or high-end desktops, they are expected to offer significantly improved performance and appeal.
