The high-end AM5 X870 and X870E motherboards for the upcoming 800-series from AMD are slated to make their debut around late September, which will happen a couple of months after we foresee the release date window for Ryzen becoming official (assuming AMD sticks with “October” as it’s said).

Announced at Computex 2024, AMD did show off its upcoming X870 and X870E motherboards from several motherboard makers. Nevertheless, these new AM5 motherboards are not only getting refreshed aesthetics but an array of fresh I/O capabilities as well – USB4 highlights among them.

The Upcoming AMD X870E & X870 AM5 Motherboards

PCIe Gen5 will make its debut on the graphics and M.2 NVMe slots of X870E as well as X870 motherboards, featuring improved EXPO OC capabilities that provide additional DDR5 memory kits to operate at higher-clock speed for users. Many motherboard makers gave us an early look at their latest designs during Computex, though these products will be trickling out a couple of months after the Ryzen 9000 CPU family goes on sale on July 31st.

September 30 – Round AMD releasing the X870E and a cheaper model would aid with availability plans too, rostered for incoming intended as then closer to when some next-generation Ryzen 9000X3D chips roll out in late-2022; these CPUs don’t yet have official launch dates though.

Not only is AMD set to introduce the high-end X870E and X870 as we already covered, but it seems that they will also offer something for the mid-range market in B850 and B840 capitalism. The 600-series is very firmly established within the industry – especially lots of B650 SKUs in the channel so it will take time before motherboards based on the new chipset start to flow.

With the next Ryzen 9000-Seires on AM5 already in development, motherboard vendors are planning accordingly to price down existing products (X670/B650/A620) that way future users will be more likely & tempted to upgrade their systems sooner this time.

Thankfully, the AMD 600-series is still more than strong enough to handle Ryzen 9000 CPUs and a great selection is available from many motherboard vendors. Furthermore, it also means new Ryzen 7000 Desktop CPUs are due to receive a discount soon; this only increases the entry-level value prop seen in AM5.

With DDR5 memory prices at their lowest, it is impossible not to stand out even at current prices for the AM5 ecosystem, with flagship Ryzen 7000 CPUs, such as my 12-core 24-thread Ryzen 7800X3D, approaching for the first time $300, and the topmost model for the first time slipping to prices below $500 in recent weeks. The AMD X870E and X870 motherboards will certainly come with a high-end premium price, but it is an investment that will not cease to pay off even for increasingly dominant overclocking memories with X870E hardbases, which will make previously impossible with the most powerful boards such as X670E.

Soon, a detailed discussion will be held on the potential capabilities for overclocking the Ryzen 9000 series and the X870 E) Motherboard, and only a couple of months after their full launch, it is clear that AMD has a complete line of motherboards covering the leading and maximum segments of users who want to individual performances with the latest Zen 5 chips to the maximum.
