AMD will now power Chromebooks as well

To make a pleasing 2019, AMD will power the new age Chromebooks that will require lesser power, more productivity and will run on Google’s Chromebook OS. AMD hasn’t yet played any role in the Chromebook market.

Most of the processors that typically go into Chromebooks are lower grade Celerons and Pentiums, which AMD doesn’t particularly compete against.

AMD has made a smart move by dedicating its A-series APUs for Chromebooks that need lesser power and performance.

So, instead of going for the Intel Pentium and Celeron processors, Chromebook makers including Acer, HP, and other OEMs will start using the refreshed AMD A6-9220C and AMD A4-9120C.

For the Red Team, now is the right time to enter this market. To this end, AMD has launched its A-Series processors with a 6W TDP.

7th Generation AMD A-Series Processors: Versatile A-Series processor for Google Chromebooks

Both of the AMD A6-9220C and AMD A4-9120C will have TDP of as low as 6 Watt and 1MB of cache. These small CPUs built on 28nm architecture will have one core/module. That means, these processors will be dual-core ones and will have 2 threads.

The A6-9220C is the best processor out of the pair, with a 1.8 GHz base frequency and a 2.7 GHz turbo frequency. It has 192 SPs running at 720 MHz and also supports VP9/H.264/H.265 decode.

While the AMD A4-9120C is slightly slower with 1.8 GHz base frequency and a 2.7 GHz turbo frequency. It has 192 SPs running at 600 MHz and also supports VP9/H.264/H.265 decode.

The graphics inside is AMD’s GCN 1.2 family, much better than Intel’s integrated graphics. AMD A6-9220C has integrated Radeon R5 graphics, on the other hand, AMD A4-9120C will feature Radeon R4 graphics.

The 7th Gen AMD A-Series processors deliver ideal computing experiences, from fluid web browsing to effortless everyday productivity, social media, streaming and web gaming. The AMD A6-9220C processor provides:

HP’s alleged Chromebook 14 powered by new AMD processors
  • up to 23% faster web browsing and up to 24% faster web application performance than the Intel Pentium N4200 and Celeron N3350, respectively
  • up to 3.2X faster email performance and up to 74% higher office application productivity than the Intel Pentium N4200 and Celeron N3350, respectively
  • up to 42% faster photo editing performance and up to 43% faster web gaming experiences than the Intel Pentium N4200 and Celeron N3350, respectively

Chromebooks are usually used for office style work, some web browsing, and leisure, now AMD seems confident they have a part that their processors can serve these purposes as well.

All of the AMD-based Chromebooks are claimed to give a minimum of 10hrs of battery life, which AMD supposes as a basic requirement for Chromebooks. These two processors might can also be seen powering entry-level Windows notebooks.
