AMD Threadripper Pro 7000WX leaked to come up with 96 cores

According to leaked AMD presentations, the next-generation Threadripper PRO Workstation CPU family will be available this fall. There have been numerous leaks for the AMD Threadripper PRO family, codenamed Storm Peak and branded as the Threadripper 7000 series. The new family will have up to 96 cores based on the Zen 4 core architecture, and we have some additional information thanks to the recent leak from Underfox.

The benchmark utilized in this case isn’t specified, although it assesses the render performance of workstation-class processors. The Intel Xeon “Sapphire Rapids” CPU completes the render in 1,125 seconds, whereas the Threadripper PRO 7995WX completes it in 657 seconds, allowing up to 75% more renders per day. That should be obvious considering the chip’s 71% increase in core/thread count, but Intel only supplies 56 cores, thus those looking for higher performance have only one option: Threadripper PRO.

The leak also shows the existing AMD Threadripper PRO 5000 CPUs as well as obtaining up to 20% higher performance vs Intel Xeon chips, with the upcoming Threadripper PRO 7000 CPUs extending that lead.

The CPU render in this presentation is fascinating because it does not appear to be a Threadripper PRO 5000 chip based on its IHS. In reality, if you look closely, you’ll notice that this isn’t a Genoa or Bergamo CPU at all, but rather the same IHS used by Siena and seen in a recent leak.

This suggests that the SP6 platform will be used for the next-generation Threadripper PRO 7000 CPUs, but it will be interesting to see if the 96-core variant drops on the same socket or gets the SP5 treatment, given that the lineup will be split between 4-channel and 8-channel boards, as previously rumored.

The AMD Threadripper PRO 7000 CPUs and Storm Peak platform will significantly improve multi-threaded performance, further pushing the workstation performance envelope.
