AMD Strix Halo “Ryzen AI Max” APU Details Emerge: 16 CPU Cores, 40 GPU Cores, and 96 GB Memory Allocation

With up to 16 CPU cores and 40 GPU cores, AMD’s upcoming Strix Halo APUs are expected to be part of the “Ryzen AI Max” family with new features. With these new chiplet-style APUs, the goal is in sight of offering mobile users a much faster performance level for both CPU and GPU assignments. That makes them a significant improvement over what has already happened in the category, and nothing to sneeze at in and of itself. New details from 金猪升级包 on Weibo have revealed the branding and SKUs for these next-gen chips.

More About the AMD Strix Halo Ryzen AI Max APU

These Strix Halo APUs from AMD will go by the branding “Ryzen AI Max.” This fits in with the Max naming scheme we already see from Apple’s SoCs that are available as vanilla, Max, or Ultra configurations. The standard offering will be called the Ryzen AI 300 “Strix,” the same as a best-of-the-best version of it, and an optical interpretative variant of it, will wear Strix Halo nomenclature. We have yet to see if AMD will launch an “Ultra” version at some point, but the SKUs will sit alongside each other as Max and Max+ examples.

The top-of-the-line AMD Ryzen AI Max “Strix Halo” family product here is the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with 16 cores based on the Zen 5 CPU architecture and a tremendously large 40 Compute Units utilizing RDNA 3.5 GPU architecture. This chip is anticipated most reliable in the series having 130W TDP according to the previous rumor mill. The device will also come with support for 4-channel LPDDR5X memory.

The other SKUs include the Ryzen AI Max 390, which features 12 CPU and 40 GPU cores, and the entry-level Ryzen AI Max 385 with 8 CPU cores and 32 GPU cores. With the Ryzen AI 9 HX 375 being the top SKU in the non-Halo series, it’s likely that AMD will introduce a Ryzen AI Max 380 aimed at entry-level users.

Another notable aspect of the Ryzen AI Max 300 “Strix Halo” lineup is the ability to allocate up to 96 GB of system memory as video memory. The Strix Halo platforms are expected to support up to 128 GB of memory, which will greatly benefit integrated GPUs, particularly those with 40-CU or 32-CU configurations.

AMD’s Strix Halo APUs are anticipated to launch in 2025 alongside other Zen 5 mobile products, including Fire Range and Krackan Point, which will be integrated into a variety of laptops, tablets, handhelds, and Mini PCs throughout the year.
