A fresh leak has revealed new details on the AMD Strix Halo APUs, which will likely feature in high-end mobile platforms. This information is arising from a person who goes by thermal engineer Sam Jiun-Wei Hu, which makes sense even though he’s actually developing some cooling solution for the ASUS ROG Flow Z13 (2025), another device that will leverage high-performing APUs.
More About the AMD Strix Halo APU Details Leak
The Strix Halo consists of two Zen 5 CCDs and one GPU die with I/O and memory controllers. The Zen 5 CCDs have 66.345 mm² and 70.6mm², including die stiffeners on each CCD featuring 8 cores, totaling 16 cores and 32 threads. The iGPU die is large measuring 19.18 x 16.02 mm (307 mm²) in comparison to the whole Strix Point APU which comes in at a size of about 232.5mm².
This larger die houses up to 40 RDNA 3.5 compute units, indicating substantial performance capabilities. The total dimensions of the Strix Halo die are 24.04 x 19.78 mm (475.31 mm²), nearly double the size of the Strix Point APU. The IOD, which includes the RDNA 3.5 iGPU, has a hotspot temperature of 86.6°C, highlighting the iGPU as the most power-hungry and thermally intensive component.
Regarding power consumption details, the Zen 5 CCD has a 15W rating, making the 30W of both CCDs. The IOD housing the RDNA 3.5 iGPU has a 72W rating, while SO-DIMM memory adds another 13W, leading to a pre-DRAM total of about 115W. The Strix Halo APU supports 32GB to 128GB of SO-DIMM memory and uses both SO-DIMM and LPDDR5X, with speeds of up to 8533 MT/s. Its iGPU will be tested against high-end mobile GPUs the Intel Raptor Lake and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070.
However, the ROG Flow Z13 will pack in advanced cooling thanks to a 1.3mm vapor chamber and dual fans with speeds reaching up to an impressive rate of 2000 RPM without losing airflow optimization. But we should note that the system is supposed to be able to cool two 120W APUs in a nice compact 13-inch form factor.
Its vapor chamber will be constructed of aluminum fins and stainless steel SUS304 to direct airflow in a 12V fan configuration. Thermal management will keep temperatures in check, with the battery never exceeding 41°C (106°F), the touch screen not topping out above 48°C (118.4°), and the bottom case always being less than 50°C.
The cooling system also should guarantee quiet operation at no higher than a maximum of about around dBA levels when working hard. AMD’s Strix Halo APUs are expected to launch in 2025, alongside other Zen 5 products, and will feature in a range of devices including laptops, tablets, handhelds, and Mini PCs.
