AMD Ryzen 9 9950X CPU Tested with Unlimited PPT Mode: 320W Power, Over 5.5 GHz Clocks Across All Cores

AMD’s Ryzen 9 9950X CPU has undergone rigorous testing, achieving a 5.5 GHz all-core overclock and utilizing an unlimited power profile pushing 320W. Igor_kavinski, a forum member on Anandtech recently published (among others) copious Blender benchmark data with different TDP limits. The results provided in the graph above are for 60W, 90W, and 120W as well up to 160 W PPT settings. The new entries include a 253W overclocked to 5.

More About the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X CPU

The chip tested is an engineering sample, so it probably did not hit the same clocks as a retail one. Lower-power-limit results showed competitive performance: the Ryzen 9 9950X matched i9-12900K at 60W, boosting to a reported effective fantastically low frequency of 4 GHz. Scaling up, at 230W PPT, the system outperformed the current generation’s most robust processors while exceeding 5.6 GHz.

Although the maximum frequency largely remained unchanged under unlimited PPT, all-core clocks exceeded 5.5 GHz and landed within 5.4 GHz at 230W PPT. Moreover, the continuous 5.5 GHz all-core overclock at a 253W PPT adhered to Intel’s maximum power specification for Core i9 CPUs.

Crucially, all the aforementioned tests used substantial water-cooling solutions as supported by AMD for its Ryzen 9 9000-series CPUs, such as the 9950X. The robust cooling solution proved invaluable, keeping temperatures under 90°C even at a demanding 320W TDP.

Even with the PPT raised to unlimited, the CPU still hit a peak of 80°C and boosted itself up to as high as 5621 MHz averaging 5378 MHz across all cores. Peak temperatures actually did a little lower at 61°C than with the static 253W PPT overclock, maintaining a stable 5.5 GHz frequency across all cores.

Performance comparisons based on the data set showed that, at stock settings, the Ryzen 9 9950X increased performance by up to 40% over a Core i9-14900K and even a 38 % lead over the much older Ryzen 9 7950X. Meanwhile, past 230W PPT the increase per watt was a few percent at most which means that you need to have optimal performance here or with an all-core overclock around 5.5 GHz.

AMD continues to lead in efficiency with its Zen architecture, promising strong performance with its upcoming Ryzen 9000 “Zen 5” Desktop CPUs expected later this month. Further tests and reviews will likely provide deeper insights into AMD’s next-generation lineup.

FAQs

What is PPT in AMD CPUs?

PPT, or Package Power Tracking, is a feature that limits the maximum power consumption of AMD CPUs to ensure efficient operation and thermal management.

How does the Ryzen 9 9950X achieve over 5.5 GHz on all cores?

Achieving over 5.5 GHz on all cores requires robust cooling and adjustments to power settings, such as utilizing an unlimited PPT mode and careful overclocking techniques.
