According to the leak, AMD apparently has another Ryzen 8040 series Hawk Point APU up its sleeve in the form of a bin called Ryzen 7 8745HS which will not feature an AI NPU. The leak via trusted source Golden Pig Upgrade on Weibo, reveals that AMD has ordered these new APU units designed for value first mobility platform.
More About the AMD Ryzen 7 8745HS
The Ryzen 7 8745HS APU gets exactly the same specs as an already-released SKU, the Ryzen 7 8845HS. It includes 8 cores based on the Zen 4 architecture with support for 16 threads and a total cache of 16 MB for L3 and 8 MB for L2. The chip is rumored to run at 3.8 GHz base but with boost frequency up top 5.1GHz in single core mode. Meanwhile, graphics will be taken care of by the Radeon 780M iGPU with 12 compute units (RDNA 3), ticking at up to 2700 MHz. Ryzen 8040HS line-up will be available starting from the default TDP of 45W and will range between 35-45W.
The Ryzen 7 8745HS, on the other hand, will simply omit the AI NPU that its predecessor possessed as part of an APU solution – which paired this same CPU with a component delivering up to 16 TOPS and as much as 38 platform TOPs. As a result, its overall TOPS will be capped at 25 (combined GPU and CPU performance), lower than Intel Meteor Lake “Core Ultra” CPUs at up to 34 platform TOPS.
Catering to users that may not need dedicated NPU abilities, But those laptops are already equipped with discrete graphics chips (like the Vega GPUs) that have higher TOPs than APU integrates.
The NPU-less Ryzen 7 8745HS is also likely to help position it for use across a range of laptop designs. AMD’s upcoming Strix Point APUs due for announcement later this month will similarly cement AMD AI capabilities pushing up to 50 TOPS per individual NPU or a seldom-seen together/system-wide high of some 80 TOPs. By comparison, Intel’s Lunar Lake CPUs are rumored to exceed 100 TOPS using 48 TOPS from the NPU with a strong AI ability due to the inclusion of Xe2 GPUs.
