AMD has introduced its new Hawk Point APU – the Ryzen 7 8745H/HS lacks an NPU while featuring Zen 4 CPU cores and RDNA3 iGPU cores. Reports earlier suggested AMD had been working on a new Hawk Point APU without AI acceleration which eventually led to the Ryzen 7 8745H/HS. It has a very similar layout to that of the Ryzen 7 8845HS, but one that results in lower CPU and GPU clock speeds.
The All New AMD Ryzen 7 8745H/HS ‘Zen 4’ APU
The Ryzen 7 8745H/HS APU has the same specifications as the Ryzen 7 8845HS. It includes 8 Zen 4 cores and 16 threads, 16 MB L3 cache, and 8 MB L2 cache. However, it has a lower boost clock of 4.9 GHz instead of the 5.1 GHz boost for the 8845HS. It also has the same Radeon 780M iGPU as the 8845HS, based on RDNA 3 designed with 12 CUs and clocked at 2600 MHz, whereas the 8845HS is clocked at 2700 MHz. The 8840HS can range from 35W to 45W of TDP.
However, the Ryzen 7 8845HS also has an integrated NPU with 16 TOPS and a platform TOPS of 38. The Ryzen 7 8745H/HS, lacking this NPU, has a combined total of 25 TOPS (GPU + CPU). The Intel Meteor Lake “Core Ultra” CPUs are much faster, offering up to 34 TOPS. For users that do not require AI acceleration, and prefer cost-effective options, AMD offers models without built-in NPUs. These APUs are going to power some mobile systems that include a discrete GPU, which is capable of higher TOPS than the APU altogether.
When launched, the Hawk Point Ryzen 7 laptop family will become more accessible to mainstream markets as a result of admixture. JD.com has already listed Lenovo’s IdeaPad Pro 14 which will come with 24 GB RAM and TB storage for 5499 RMB ($761 USD). We expect the first laptops with this new APU to arrive before the end of November.
