AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU samples have been spotted in the public, and it appears that one of them has leaked the first images. The majority of the image and the OPN code are blurred, but it appears that the first AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D chips have been released into the market. What’s intriguing about this is that the leaker who posted the image also claims it won’t allow overclocking.
There are various reasons for this, one of which is that AMD had to make some compromises to handle the additional 64 MB of cache in its first 3D V-Cache chip. The lower clock on the X3D chip was made as a tradeoff, however, it appears that the heat output from the CCD underneath the cache die can badly harm it and potentially break it if it’s overclocked.
Frequency is important, frequency is important but every processor, every game is always a series of tradeoffs, bottleneck mitigations and in our architecture, when you are in the range of four and a half to five GIgahertz, four or five is enough when you put a ton of memory on top you know you are not limited by frequency anymore, you are not giving anything up to target that frequency, its the performance limiters or the performance accelerators move up, move elsewhere in the architecture so we can dial back on the frequency a bit ease up on the thermals, make it easier to cool and drop in a big extra blob of cache on top which is more transistor density, more thermal density so that’s a very easy trade-off.
Now, this is purely a theory on my part at the moment, but it’s most likely the reason for the Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPUs’ inability to overclock. Another possibility is that this is an engineering sample obtained by this leaker, which does not have overclocking enabled.
The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, based on the 7nm Zen 3 core architecture, will be the first and only chip with 3D V-Cache. Thanks to its additional 64 MB 3D Stacked SRAM design, the CPU will have 8 cores, 16 threads, and 100 MB of total cache. With a TDP of 105W, clock speeds will be maintained at 3.4 GHz base and 4.5 GHz boost.
When it comes to cost, the CPU will have the same MSRP as the 5800X at $449 US, which means that the non-3D chip will be reduced to $399 or even lower. The 5800X3D is more expensive than the Intel Core i7-12700K, which has more cores and threads but less cache. Performance comparisons between the two processors will be interesting to watch.
