To address shortcomings in Linux support and bridge the gap, AMD has accelerated the release of patches specifically aimed at enabling RDNA 4 GPU functionality.

According to reports, from Phoronix AMD Linux team has introduced a series of patches for the AMDGPU kernel. These patches lay the groundwork for supporting the RDNA 4 architecture by introducing IP blocks such as ATHUB 4.1 LSDMA 7.0 IH 7.0 and HDP 7.0. The purpose of these features is to improve data management and internal communication processes to enhance performance.

While these patches primarily focus on providing instruction support than groundbreaking features they are a step forward in AMD’s efforts to improve compatibility with Linux systems. Although specific details about the RDNA 4 lineup are not yet available the release of these patches demonstrates AMD’s commitment to staying of the competition and ensuring support for their upcoming GPU architecture. While these patches may not reveal all the details at this stage they create a foundation for advancements.

As we anticipate the launch of RDNA 4 in the future there is still plenty of time for further optimizations and enhancements to be made to the AMDGPU driver on Linux. This will ultimately provide users with an experience when RDNA 4 GPUs are released. It is expected that these patches will be merged into the AMDGPU driver by the time Linux version 6.9 is released aligning with expectations, for when RDNA 4 GPUs will become available.
