AMD Radeon 890M and 880M GPUs Set New iGPU Standards with RDNA 3.5 Architecture

The RDNA 3.5 graphics architecture on the AMD Radeon 890M and Radeon 880M GPUs pushes their integration to new performance highs. The new models include updates over their predecessors that were introduced along with the AMD Ryzen AI 300 “Strix” APUs. The Ryzen AI 300-series houses CPUs with Zen 5 cores, and NPUs with XDNA 2 cores as well GPUs that have RDNA 3.5 cores bringing a performance uplift such is next to none.

More About the AMD Radeon 890M and 880M GPUs

While RDNA 3.5 isn’t quite the full upgrade that on-lookers might get with the upcoming generation, it shows AMD can still wring additional performance out of existing designs. The Radeon 890M inside the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and the Radeon 880M in will be running on an RDNA 3.5 architecture-based GPU for both, which is a first.

Radeon 890M is the top-of-the-line offering with a maximum of 16 Compute Units (1024 cores) clocked up to 2900 MHz and Radeon 880M packs only up to 12 Compute Units (768 cores), both hitting their peak clock speed. The Radeon 890M has a total of four six-core CCUs, so it is naturally the RDNA 4 flagship with considerably more cores than its predecessor -33% in the count matching that old era’s result.

The Golden Pig Upgrade has conducted an extensive test of these GPUs, putting them against other high-performance chips including Intel Core Ultra 9 185H and Ryzen 7 8845HS, with different configurations, and memory speeds. Competing with the Intel Arc Xe-LPG in the 3DMark benchmarks, Radeon 890M and Radeon 880M supplanted Arc Xe-LPG and showed 4.7% and 8.9% better performance, respectively.

Specifically, the Radeon 880M outperformed the Radeon 780M by 5.2 percent. Both RDNA 3.5 iGPUs have outstripped Intel’s Hawk Point and Meteor Lake by 18 percent for 890M and 16 percent for 880M in AAA titles, as well as 41 percent for 890M and 40 percent for 880M in esports. The Radeon 890M and 880M also compare favorably against discrete GPUs, with the Radeon 890M surpassing the GeForce GTX 1650 Ti and the Radeon 880M outpacing the GTX 1650.

These GPUs support the latest features, including FSR Super Resolution and Anti-Lag+, offering enhanced gaming experiences. AMD’s RDNA 3.5 architecture sets a new standard for integrated graphics, with future expansions expected to deliver even greater performance. Intel’s upcoming Xe2 architecture and AMD’s Strix Halo series will further push the boundaries of GPU technology, promising exciting developments for Mini PCs and handheld gaming devices.
