According to recent information, Advanced Micro Devices has been working on an accelerated processing unit (APU) with a built-in graphics processor codenamed “Cyan Skillfish”. Its been acclaimed that the new APU will be based on the first-generation RDNA architecture (Navi 1x).

AMD claims that it will be targeted towards various consumers, as well as embedded applications so that it can take advantage of a relatively modern GPU architecture. AMD has already submitted the driver code that enables AMD’s Radeon “Cyan Skillfish” in the upcoming Linux 5.15 OS release.

The patches that enable the Cyan Skillfish GPU which was released by AMD earlier show us that the graphics processor will be based on the RDNA architecture and will also belong to the Navi 10-series family of GPUs.

The only thing we know so far is that many industry experts believe that AMD’s next-generation APUs will use RDNA 2 and RDNA. The enablement of Cyan Skillfish suggests that AMD is at least considering an RDNA-powered APU or even APUs.

AMD’s rDNA 2 architecture is indeed better in terms of performance than the original RDNA which was introduced two years ago however, the latter has many advantages. Such as a smaller die size, and a lack of ray tracing logic, and generally higher transistor density. And the advantage of using a smaller die size means that the company will experience lower manufacturing costs.

Whatever the deal maybe we know that as of now AMD has a small Radeon “Cyan Skillfish” RDNA-based graphics processor in the pipeline which most probably belongs to the Navi 10 family. And it’s worth seeing that how will AMD’s Cyan Skillfish compete against the best CPUs.
