Report: AMD Ryzen CPUs are losing to Alder Lake and Raptor Lake in PC Market

According to Susquehanna, an investment firm, Intel appears to be holding up quite well in the general PC market when compared to AMD. Susquehanna recently upgraded Intel Corporation’s rating from negative to neutral, with one of the main reasons cited being Intel’s highly competitive general PC portfolio versus AMD.

While AMD’s Ryzen CPUs have dominated Intel for several years due to being very competitive in terms of performance and value, the most recent options appear to be the polar opposite of what the company had originally planned. Intel, on the other hand, is said to have more competitively positioned 12th and 13th Gen CPUs, which will result in AMD losing PC market share.

AMD did post an impressive 30% overall x86 market share, which was a huge accomplishment for the company, but the company is focusing more on its EPYC server side of things, while Ryzen CPUs may now see a drop in overall market share.

AMD recently delayed its Ryzen 7040 Phoenix CPUs for laptops by a month, and the company has prioritized premium markets for its X3D chips, with the Ryzen 7 7800X3D arriving a month later as well. The Dragon Range CPU lineup also targets the high-end segment, with the only options available for now being high-end Ryzen 9 7945HX laptops, while others remain unavailable despite the company announcing official availability a week ago.

When it comes to AMD’s AM5 platform, the company has no SKUs in the sub-$250 US price range, whereas Intel has several SKUs in that range and their platform cost remains far more appealing. Meanwhile, AMD’s AM4 platform continues to dominate in terms of sales, with Ryzen 7 5800X3D still selling like hotcakes despite the release of newer X3D chips and the company offering a variety of incentives, promotions, and discounts through its retailers to sweeten the AM5 platform for users.

However, not everything is going well for Intel (yet). The recent Sapphire Rapids-SP from Chipzilla will face stiff competition from AMD’s EPYC Genoa, Bergamo, and Genoa-X CPUs, all of which will be available this year. The Emerald Rapids-SP will be the planned follow-up to the Sapphire Rapids-SP, but will only be available on 1S / 2S platforms by the end of this year.
