AMD FSR3 vs. DLSS: Is AMD simply copying NVIDIA or is it a whole new world?

AMD FSR3 vs. DLSS: After waiting for almost a year, AMD has now provided additional information about the impending FidelityFX Super Resolution 3. If you have read the initial announcement, you are aware of what to expect: to increase frame rates, AMD’s FSR upscaling is combined with a feature known as Fluid Motion Frames.

AMD claims that its Fluid Motion Frames are compatible with GPUs from Nvidia and Intel as well as the first RDNA generation (RX 5000) and newer. Compared to Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling 3 (DLSS 3), it takes a very different approach. A current generation Nvidia RTX GPU, such as the RTX 4070, is specifically needed for the DLSS Frame Generation functionality.

AMD FSR3 vs. DLSS – which one is better?

With the maximum quality ray tracing preset enabled, AMD demonstrated the capability in Forspoken, where the recently unveiled RX 7800 XT went from 36 frames per second (fps) to 122 fps at 4K. That’s a frame rate that is almost four times as fast, which is impressive.

However, Fluid Motion Frames function in the same way. According to AMD, the technology uses frame interpolation to add a frame between two produced frames, theoretically tripling performance. AMD is also adding Native AA mode in addition to FSR 3. This is comparable to Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing (DLAA) from Nvidia. While rendering your game at native resolution, it makes use of FSR’s sharpening and anti-aliasing capabilities.

There is no way to predict how long it will take to add the feature to new titles because FSR 3 requires developer integration. However, AMD intends to integrate some elements of FSR 3 into their driver via HYPR-RX.

This function, which was introduced last November along with FSR 3, guarantees an AMD Software performance improvement with only one click. According to AMD, it uses AMD Software to identify the ideal set of features for the game you’re playing and instantly switches them on. A crucial addition made by AMD to the driver is Fluid Motion Frames.
